What is EFT / tapping?

You may want to try it straight away, even if it’s only in your imagination

You are using the tip of your fingers to tap, gently, on certain points of your head and body.
This, we know, calms down our nervous system, our brain, our body and our mind.
At the same time, you are speaking out the words that describe your emotion, your pain, or your limitation.
As you do this, you are giving your whole system (body and mind) two different kinds of information: the distressing one, and the calming one.
You notice how your system calms down.

Technical wording

EFT, emotional freedom technique, or tapping, is described as “emotional acupuncture” or, more precisely, as “psychological acupressure”.

The NHS (UK) has evaluated it’s use for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a “combined somatic and cognitive therapy”. This means, in simpler terms, that we do something (we tap) at the same time that we focus our mind on something (by speaking out loud, noticing our feelings, etc).

EFT is not only useful with PTSD. Some groups in the NHS are starting to use EFT as a way to help us deal with issues like “fears, phobias and pain. It can also be applied to help stop smoking and lose weight”.

By yourself or with assistance?

There are several ways to start tapping:

You can learn and do it by yourself (even with EFTi manuals – eftinternational.org), and there are apps that can guide you if that’s what suits you best.

As an alternative, we are planning to start doing local workshops soon. Write to us (use the form below) if you’d like to know the details.

Finally, we and many others can help you. When you tap with the assistance of an EFT practitioner, you get extra benefits. You can relax into it. Someone listens to you and gives you back your own words, which means you can be sure you are being listened to. Someone keeps track of the gist of what’s bothering you, and notices details that will be helpful. Both of you, client and practitioner, are looking at the same issue, like twin eyes looking at the same object, untying emotional knots, helping your mind and brain to notice the old patterns and to gently overcome them… So, while you can tap on your own, it does help to tap with someone else that is trained.

How we can work with you

So what happens if you’d like to learn with us?

We start off with what’s in front of us: your presenting problem, your physical or emotional pain, whatever you’re facing as a limitation. Some things can be solved with surprising speed, and others need more work, simply because they are more complex.

The approach is always to do it little by little, gently, going only to where you’re ready to go, and focusing on what appears as relevant in the moment. That way, it is possible to dismantle heavy problems, look at specific aspects to see how much they matter in our particular case, and – as someone put it – “speak to our brain in its own language”.

You are in control. It’s, literally, in your own hands. And we can also help.

Just to reinforce the point about “talking to the brain in its own language”, some say there are two parts of us: the part that has the energy, and the part that drives that energy. We could think of them as “the rider” and “the horse”. So, in the course of one of our sessions, we made the sketch below. Let us know what you think!
